SUMMARY:Book Launch Presentation "Unfair ID" with Prof. Silvia Masiero
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\n\nUKAIS is delighted to host Silvia Masiero\, Associate P
rofessor of Information Systems at the University of Oslo\, Norway\, in it
s next seminar. Silvia will deliver a book launch presentation on her fort
hcoming book Unfair ID.\n\n\n\n\nBio: Silvia Masiero is an Associate Prof
essor of Information Systems at the University of Oslo\, Norway. She is a
long-term researcher of information and communication technology for devel
opment (ICT4D)\, with a focus on the role of digital platforms in socio-ec
onomic development processes. She has authored over 80 peer-reviewed resea
rch papers on topics including digital social protection\, platform-mediat
ed surveillance and decolonial approaches to information systems research.
Silvia is Editor-In-Chief of the journal Information Technology for Devel
opment\, Chair of the IFIP Working Group 9.4 on the Implications of Inform
ation and Digital Technologies for Development\, and a Senior Editor at th
e Electronic Journal of Information Systems in Developing Countries. She h
as received the Association for Information Systems (AIS) Mid-Career Award
in the year 2023.\n\n\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n\n"We live in an age of digital ID. T
hrough the digitisation of our biometric and demographic selves\, digital
ID converts human beings into digital data\, which in turn mediates access
to services and rights – be they public or private\, commercial or not-
for-profit\, essential or non-essential.\n\nAllegedly designed to improve
services\, and to aid humanitarianism and social inclusion\, digital ID ha
s multiple hidden complexities. From denying access to essential goods\, t
o algorithmic bias\, to the sharing of sensitive data about vulnerable gro
ups – digital ID is not necessarily just\, or balanced\, or helping. It
is often severely unfair.\n\nThis book offers a journey into stories of un
fair ID. Exploring examples across sectors\, countries and data-managed po
pulations\, it takes a data justice perspective on what this unfairness ef
fectively means for the users of digital identity systems. Examples range
from denial of food rations to eligible beneficiaries\, to the searchabili
ty of asylum-seeker data in police force databases\, to the algorithmicall
y-determined exclusion of genuinely entitled users from anti-poverty schem
es.\n\nThis book also explores forms of resistance to these injustices\, s
howing how solidarity movements can resist\, engage and challenge the dama
ges of unfair ID. Through its research\, it sets out to imagine forms of f
air ID where people’s rights and entitlements are upheld\, ultimately co
ntributing to build a future of justice for the digitally identified."\n\n
\nThe seminar will be held on zoom on the 15th of November at 12pm GMT\, d
etails below.\n\nAll welcome.  Please circulate to your networks.\n\nTopi
