SUMMARY:UKAIS Seminar ‘Counter-Institutionalization and the Struggle for
Epistemic Authority in the Age of Disinformation
DESCRIPTION:UKAIS is delighted to invite you an online seminar delivered by
Serhii Prokopenko\, Researcher &amp\; Media Practitioner at Simon Kuznets
Kharkiv National University of Economics\, Ukraine. The seminar will take
place on the 4th of June 12-1pm on zoom\n\nSerhii’s talk is entitled
‘Counter-Institutionalization and the Struggle for Epistemic Authority i
n the Age of Disinformation’ and draws on a paper which received the run
ner-up place for a research-in-progress paper in the UKAIS conference this
year. You can find an abstract and a brief bio below.\n\nABSTRACT:\nThe p
aper examines contemporary disinformation as a process of counter-institut
ionalization through which institutional interventions reshape epistemic a
uthority within global information ecosystems. Drawing on neo-institutiona
 l theory (DiMaggio &amp\; Powell\, 1983) and the concept of counter-instit
utionalization (Zürn\, 2018)\, the study employs a qualitative critical c
ase study design that integrates discursive analysis\, comparative institu
tional analysis\, and network-oriented examination of transnational inform
ation infrastructures.\nThe paper contributes to research on disinformatio
n and global media governance by shifting the analytical focus from conten
t-level manipulation to institutional-level strategies of epistemic contes
tation.\n\nThe findings show how credibility-producing institutional forms
are selectively replicated and reoriented to contest the authority of est
ablished fact-checking networks\, underscoring the need for resilience app
roaches that extend beyond content correction to institutional safeguards.
\n\nBIO:\nSerhii Prokopenko is a PhD researcher at Simon Kuznets Kharkiv N
ational University of Economics (Ukraine) and an editor at Gwara Media\, a
n independent newsroom in Kharkiv. His research examines disinformation an
d organizational resilience\, focusing on epistemic authority\, digital in
frastructures\, and organizational management in the context of geopolitic
al instability. His work combines organizational theory with field-based d
ata from extreme contexts\, including sustained infrastructural disruption
and information warfare.\n\nZOOM INVITE\n\nDimitra Petrakaki is inviting
